Set up in May 2015 as a ‘Community Interest Company’ (CIC), Greenbuttercup (www.greenbuttercup.org) is a Romsey-based, not-for-profit, user-led organisation, whose services promote ‘independent living’ and ‘well-being’ through a comprehensive range of tailor-made workshops and activities at an affordable cost. Our aim is to enable service-users to achieve full participation in all spheres of society. We facilitate and provide training, new skills and experience to all sectors of the community.
In its first two years of incorporation, Greenbuttercup CIC’s services have included a number of successful ‘art & crafts’ workshops. Many of these workshops have involved working with vulnerable groups and individuals, who have been seen to particularly benefit from outreach art activities. It was for this reason that we were approached last year by Romsey Dementia Action Group, to set-up and run ‘arts & crafts’ workshops for those living with dementia and their carers. October 2016 saw the launch of our now regular monthly sessions.
The arts & crafts sessions take place on the first Friday of the month from 10.30a.m. to 12.30p.m. We use the Green Room at the Plaza Theatre in Romsey. This is a quiet, safe environment, and we are usually the only ones in the building. Everything is accessible, and there is parking to the rear of the Theatre. Entry is by the side door, up the accessible ramp. We like the carers to come along as well, at least until the person with dementia is familiar and happy with the set-up. Most carers do stay, and enjoy participating in the activities themselves. No experience is necessary and we run a ‘have-a-go’ activity each time. Participants are welcome to bring something along of their own to do if they would prefer. We are also open to suggestions for future activities. The activities so far have been: papercraft; clay pots; Christmas crafts; printing; painting; collage; Easter crafts; glass painting; flower-making; making & planting-up mosaic pots. The cost is £3 per person, which includes drinks, biscuits and all art materials - but you can come along and try us out with a free first session.
The sessions are currently run by Andrea Ross-Bain and Pamela Eastwood, who are Directors of Greenbuttercup CIC, with assistance from two volunteer helpers. The session leaders are DBS-checked and trained in Health & Safety; and there will always be at least one person in attendance who has first aid training. Both leaders and helpers are committed to enabling those attending to both participate and enjoy the activities provided. We will also continue to attend any relevant training sessions, to help improve our understanding of dementia and the running of activity-based groups for those who live with it.
